Introduction to Thermal Engineering
September 15, 2021
GENERAL OVERVIEW
Thermal Engineering is an applied science discipline. It integrates multiple fields of natural sciences with the ultimate goal of maximizing benefits for human life and sustainable development. Thermal Engineering plays a vital role in most industrial and civil sectors, particularly in energy production and utilization.
Thermal Engineering (also known as Heat–Refrigeration Engineering or Electrical–Refrigeration Engineering) comprises three main areas: energy production and conversion, including thermal power and renewable energy; heat and steam supply for industrial, commercial, and residential use; and refrigeration and air-conditioning technology.
Accordingly, newly graduated engineers have diverse career opportunities. Graduates can effectively apply their expertise in refrigeration and air-conditioning manufacturing plants; food and seafood processing factories; hotels and buildings; thermal power plants; and in industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, textiles, cement. In addition, their specialized knowledge can be applied in other fields, including construction, hospitality services, automobile and shipbuilding industries, research institutes, universities, and energy management and consultancy agencies.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To develop and implement undergraduate training programs in technologies, equipment, and systems related to Thermal Engineering (Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineering), meeting domestic workforce demands and facilitating academic articulation - international integration.
In addition, the Department develops, leads, and collaborates with units within and outside Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade (HUIT), and with international partners, to carry out science and technology projects in the field of thermal energy.
MAIN RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
- Research on heat and mass transfer processes, including enhancement techniques for heat transfer in thermal and refrigeration systems and equipment;
- Development of thermophysical property models for food products;
- Research on the application and development of new and renewable energy sources. Solutions for enhancing energy efficiency and energy-saving in thermal equipment.
